The house was built by my grandfather in 1910. He was 18 years old at the time. It was a 2 storey second generation saltbox. There were 4 tiny bedrooms upstairs and a kitchen and parlour downstairs. The front of the house defiantly faced the sometimes unforgiving Atlantic Ocean . The back of the house had 2 porches and faced the road. Nan and Grandfather raised 10 kids in that house, 5 boys in one bedroom and the girls in the other bedroom.

Nan's old house was slanting with the wind; 45 degree slant on good hurricane days. We lived on the south coast of Newfoundland. In the late summer and fall, hurricanes would sail up the eastern seaboard to peter out in Newfoundland. Dad and George, my uncle, said that someone had to fix up the house.
I jumped at the opportunity to restore the old house. It was the house that I grew up in.....
so it would a project of the heart...not the brain.......I said this repeatedly to my dear husband.
